Reading at Courtenay Gardens Primary School

At Courtenay Gardens Primary School our Literacy program is based around a whole school focus on Reading and Writing. It closely follows the expectations of the Department of Education Victorian English Curriculum.

In our Reading program the P-3 classes use the evidence based practice of Guided Reading to develop fluency, decoding and comprehension strategies.

In our 4-6 classes we have a consistent focus on Reciprocal Reading where the roles of Predictor, Clarifier, Questioner and Summariser are taught.

The approach of Literature Circles and Novel Studies is taught at the Grade 6 level.

Courtenay Gardens Primary School has an explicit approach to teaching Close Reading and our program is based on the research of Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey. This is a whole school program where consistent vocabulary and teaching is shared throughout the school.

The teaching of comprehension strategies are embedded throughout the teaching of all areas of Reading.

Our whole school Writing program involves the consistent approach to writing through the steps of planning, drafting, editing, revising and publishing. Our Writing program incorporates a range of writing instruction focussing on whole class, small group and individual needs. We include modelled, shared, guided and independent writing.

Teachers facilitate individual conferences with students to support student needs and setting goals to scaffold future learning.

Speaking and Listening:

Oral language is essential in Literacy development. Students are taught many skills in listening and responding to text and expanding their vocabulary development. They are taught to be active listeners and how to engage in conversations with others. Student voice is an integral part of our teaching and learning.

Integrated into all Literacy areas is the explicit teaching of Vocabulary.
